The art and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation. By means electronically or of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as film.
The step taken towards the first permanent photo taken with a camera, involved an 1825 heliographic engraving. This is the earliest surviving today. It was printed from a metal plate. The plate was exposed under an ordinary engraving and copied it by photographic means.
